Echo from the past – (Full Midi)

Composed on behalf of the Roermond Orchestra “De Symphonie”, in memory of all victims of war(s), on the occasion of 80 years of annual national commemoration in the Netherlands of the victims of the Second World War on May 4.

The work makes a musical link with the present, in which geopolitical tensions are increasing and history threatens to repeat itself.

The work will have its premiere on May 4, 2025 by the Roermond Orchestra “De Symphonie” conducted by the composer.

Madama Butterfly – Giacomo Puccini

‘Madama Butterfly’ is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini, with an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. It is based on the short story ‘Madame Butterfly’ (1898) by John Luther Long. The original version of the opera, in two acts, had its premiere on 17 February 1904 at ‘La Scala in Milan. After several revisions success ensued, starting with the first performance on 28 May 1904 in Brescia.
Dutch arranger Christiaan Janssen used some of the most beautiful music from ‘Madama Butterfly’ to compile a suite for Symphonic Band.

‘Regalo Festivo Ouverture’ is a frivolous and colourful overture for orchestra. The work was commissioned by the University Orchestra Maastricht and serves as a prelude to its concerts.

The work is freely inspired by Jan Steen’s painting “the village class”, in which the everyday chaos within a classroom can be felt.

It is also a reference to the connection with the university, where students experience their hopefully best time of their lives that eventually leads to a successful career.

In the work, the various musical themes develop into a grand apotheosis.

Manon Lescaut Suite – Giacomo Puccini

Giacomo Puccini composed his opera ‘Manon Lescaut’ in 1893 and it became together with ‘Tosca’ his first outstanding success. ‘Manon Lescaut’ is a devastating depiction of a woman wrestling with her desire for love on her own terms, and the rigid double standards imposed on her by society. The opera was a breakthrough hit for Puccini, and is packed with memorable music and heartbreaking drama. This suite contains some of the most beautiful music from ‘Manon Lescaut’ to compile a small suite for Symphonic Band.

…is based on 6 authentic Turkish and Armenian folk melodies as written / recorded by Komitas Vardapet (1869-1935). They are mostly songs taken from life and with a slightly melancholic character. The songs are about the different seasons, settling disputes, encouragement to dance and everyday activities such as visiting a market.

A special role is reserved for the Saz and the Duduk, two typical folk music instruments from Turkey and Armenia. The combination with Western wind instruments gives the work a special color and atmosphere, with the last movement having a rousing character.

Little Folksong Rhapsody was commissioned by wind ensemble Zuiderwind.

Franz Anton Hoffmeister was born in Rottenburg am Neckar on 12 May 1754. At the age of fourteen he went to Vienna to study law. Following his studies, however, he decided on a career in music and by the 1780s he had become one of the city’s most popular composers, with an extensive and varied catalogue of works to his credit.

Hoffmeister’s reputation today rests mainly on his activities as a music publisher. By 1785 he had established one of Vienna’s first music publishing businesses.

Hoffmeister published his own works as well as those of many important composers of the time, including Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and many others.

This transcription of the 1st movement of “Konzert für 2 Klarinetten” for (small) wind band gives soloists a great opportunity to showcase themselves in this beautiful work.

… is a concert march for fanfare band was commissioned by Fanfare Sint Cecilia Herten (NL) on the occasion of their 125th anniversary.

This concert march exudes solemnity with her lyrical and colorful passages, including a festive ending. I was inspired by the original banner of the jubilee fanfare band.

A concert march that connects old traditions with new musical initiatives.
